Sterling Silver Zodiac Astrological Signs
Astrology can be considered the “premier” science. It is a field of study that predates history. At a time where there was no technology as we know it today, people of the ancient world looked to the heavens for information that could add order to their lives. They found that time could be calibrated in terms of lunar cycles, twelve lunar cycles making a year. They gave names to these cycles based upon where the sun and stars were located at different times of the year. Thus they were able to predict rainy seasons, harvest time and other important and basic information based upon study of the heavens.
Astrology, the forerunner of astronomy, and its concepts spread throughout the ancient world. When it reached the Romans it was already a well developed field of study. The Romans assigned names to the various cycles. The names related to “little animals” (“zodiacus” in Latin) and conformed to designs that the Romans managed to imagine in the night sky, which designs we know today as “constellations.” It is from these names that we derive what we know today as the signs of the Zodiac.
Each zodiacal sign has its own glyph. The term “glyph” means “symbol.” A “hieroglyph” is a “holy symbol,” “hier,” meaning “holy.” Astrological glyphs, however, are not regarded as holy. Even so, they are interesting because I think, but do not know for certain, that they were probably used, before the time of modern writing, to depict the zodiacal sign for which the glyph stands. Thus, for example, the Leo (lion) glyph would have signified the term “lion” to the beholder.

It’s true that people of today regard astrology variously. Some have confidence in it while others regard it as pure fiction. But it is also true that this “premier science” was the very first of the sciences. Though interest in it has waxed and waned in popularity through the ages, it is still, since pre-history, studied by people in every part of the globe. Speaking for myself, I would like to suggest that this fact alone adds a certain weight to astrological concepts. While not putting a great deal of stock in much that this field of study sets forth, I do view this field of study with respect. After all, the ancients were not privy to anything that the world of technology as given us. Accordingly, they were much more adept at viewing life as mysterious and were probably better at living with mystery than we are in this age, a gift that has been lost to us from lack of use. Adding a little bit of mystery to our lives will certainly not hurt.
With that in mind, The Winged Ox offers a version of each of the twelve signs of the zodiac with its glyph. The signs themselves are offered only as pendants. The glyphs are offered as pendants or earrings.
